Frequently Asked Questions

Envirothon is a year-long commitment. We hope this page will provide answers to frequently asked questions so you can determine if it is a good fit for your family.

    How much time is required weekly?

    Weekly time commitment various for each family. Students are assigned weekly reading and spend between 1-3 hours a week on their Envirothon work. This depends on reading ability, study techniques, and methods of choice. As students get closer to our competitions, team students will meet outside of class  (zoom or in-person) on a more frequent basis and students may need to spend more time studying to prepare.

    Parents of middle schoolers should be actively involved in their student's class preparations to ensure they are successful and completing their weekly work.

    If I choose the drop-off enrollment option, am I required to attend field trips?

    Yes, you must attend all off-site field trips with your student if you choose to attend that day. A responsible adult must accompany all students on our off-site field trips who choose the drop-off option.  

    Where does the program meet?

    Our main meeting location is in Monroe, but we have field trips that are typically up to an hour away. 

    Does this count for high school credit?

    Yes, this program can count for high school credit.

    What skills will my student learn?

    Students will learn various study skills, presentation skills, and test-taking skills (for our competition students). All of these skills are essential for students are who looking at higher education. We also take tours and introduce students to college campuses.

    What is my required involvement as a parent?

    If you do not choose the drop-off program, you will be assigned a role in which you will either actively teach or develop materials for the program.

    What would help my child be successful?

    An actively participating parent makes a huge different in a child's success. Participation in field trips allows students to learn from trained professionals with industry experience. A child having an email address and a parent who can support them learning computer skills allows them to do well with our program. Children have to understand they are on a team and have to prioritize their commitment to their team.

    Active participating families get the most out of our program. Parents can help with our service projects, join on camping trips, and become part of our community.

    How do the state competition work?

    The state competition takes place out of town in Burlington, North Carolina. Students attend a Friday session, spend the night in a hotel with their family and then participate in the state competition on Saturday. Parents must attend this with their children.

    What other activities and clubs can we find in your program?

    Students have the chance to participate in a photography showcase and contest. We share group lunch and the children can participate in open gym time.

    How does Envirothon practice their faith?

    Our students begin each meeting with prayer and share intentions. We actively engage in our community in various service projects and act as the hands and feet of Jesus. We also practice Christian conflict resolution within our group.
