Five Main Topics

Envirothon focuses on five main topics that students study:
Forestry, Soil, Aquatics, Wildlife and a Current Environmental Issue. Students gain knowledge of environmental topics through hands-on experiments, field trips and weekly classes.

Forestry

While learning about forestry, students will gain knowledge on forest and plant ecosystems, understand forest management techniques, learn to identify species of trees, and more.

Soil

While digging into soil, students will learn soil properties, makeup, and ecology. They will be introduced to conservation methods for various types of land. Our group will also learn how to responsibly use land so it is preserved for future generations.

Aquatics

Envirothon students learn about marine and freshwater ecology, learn how to analyze water quality,  learn to identify aquatic organisms, gain knowledge of managing watersheds, and more.

Wildlife

Students will learn about wildlife ecology and will learn to identify specific skulls, skat, and tracks for 30 species of North Carolina animals. They will also learn the significance of wildlife and habitat management.

Current Environmental Articles (CEI)

Every year Envirothon chooses one current environmental issue facing the world. Students read many articles on the current topic and learn to analyze the issue it presents.

Past Current Issues have focused on soil, agriculture and the environment, invasive species, and climate change.
